Massachusetts: Full Practice, has enacted but not implemented the Nurse Licensure Compact. Massachusetts grants full practice authority to NPs once they attest to the Board of Registration in Nursing that they have completed at least two years of supervised practice; until then, a qualified healthcare professional, who may be a physician or an experienced NP, supervises their prescribing. NPs applying by reciprocity who have at least two years of NP practice outside Massachusetts, independent or supervised, may instead prescribe without supervision once they attest to that experience.

Texas: Restricted Practice, a Nurse Licensure Compact member. Texas requires NPs to have a prescriptive authority agreement with a supervising physician.

New York: Full Practice, outside the Nurse Licensure Compact. NPs in New York with 3,600 hours of practice or fewer must practice in collaboration with a physician under a written practice agreement and written practice protocols. NPs with more than 3,600 hours of practice are currently exempt from those requirements.

Connecticut: Full Practice, a Nurse Licensure Compact member. Connecticut requires NPs to practice in collaboration with a physician for at least three years and 2,000 hours before practicing independently. After meeting that requirement, an NP must give written notice to the Department of Public Health before practicing without a collaborative agreement.

Georgia: Restricted Practice, a Nurse Licensure Compact member. Georgia requires NPs to practice under physician supervision with a protocol agreement.
