The Role

The Urgent Care role at a glance

Urgent care nurse practitioners handle episodic acute complaints — infections, minor injuries, lacerations, sprains, and flare-ups of chronic disease — for walk-in patients of all ages. Visits are self-contained: assess, treat, and disposition, with no longitudinal panel to carry between shifts.

Most roles sit in freestanding urgent care centers, retail health clinics, and hospital-affiliated walk-in sites. Shifts often include evenings and weekends, and many clinics run providers on three or four longer shifts per week rather than a five-day clinic schedule.

Requirements & certification

  • Graduate NP degree (MSN or DNP), typically on the family track for all-ages scope
  • National certification as FNP-C (AANP) or FNP-BC (ANCC); the ENP specialty credential strengthens candidacy for higher-acuity sites
  • Active state APRN licensure and DEA registration for prescribing
  • Procedural skills employers screen for: laceration repair, splinting, incision and drainage, and plain-film interpretation
