Telehealth specifically refers to providing patient care virtually via video or phone. Remote NP jobs may include telehealth patient care but also encompass roles like utilization review, case management, or clinical documentation that are done remotely but do not involve direct patient care via video.

Nationally, nurse practitioners earn a median annual wage of $132,300 (BLS OEWS, Nurse Practitioners (29-1171), median annual wage, May 2025). Telehealth NP pay varies with experience, practice setting, geography, and employment type, so compare pay listing by listing using the ranges employers post. Some telehealth listings describe productivity-based pay, so read how patient volume affects the rate.

You need an active NP certification (ANCC or AANPCB), state APRN licensure, a master's or doctoral degree in advanced practice nursing, and the years of clinical experience each employer specifies. Some entry-level telehealth positions accept new graduates with supervision. Familiarity with EHR systems and telehealth platforms is preferred.

As of October 2026, three sets of rules apply. Medicare's telehealth flexibilities, including visits with patients at home and audio-only visits, are extended through December 31, 2027 by Section 6209 of the Consolidated Appropriations Act, 2026 (Public Law 119-75, signed February 3, 2026). The DEA and HHS extended the telemedicine flexibilities for prescribing controlled substances through December 31, 2026 (Federal Register document 2025-24123). The DEA's final rule creating a special registration for telemedicine has been under review at the Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs since August 25, 2026, so check the DEA's current guidance before prescribing controlled substances by telehealth after December 31, 2026. In every case, you need an active license in the state where the patient is located at the time of the visit, which is why telehealth listings name the states where they require licensure.
