CNMs provide prenatal care, attend labor and birth, and deliver postpartum, newborn, gynecologic, and well-person care. Many also provide contraceptive counseling and primary care services for women across the lifespan. There are currently 14 CNM positions listed here.

CNMs complete a graduate midwifery program accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Midwifery Education (ACME), then pass the national certification examination of the American Midwifery Certification Board (AMCB). Certification is maintained through AMCB's recertification program, alongside state APRN licensure.

Midwifery practice authority is defined state by state and differs from the NP framework: many states permit independent CNM practice, while others require a collaborative agreement or physician involvement for some services.
