The Palliative & Hospice role at a glance

Palliative and hospice nurse practitioners manage symptoms and goals of care for patients with serious, advanced, or life-limiting illness — pain and dyspnea control, advance care planning, and family support alongside interdisciplinary teams.

Palliative roles run alongside active treatment in hospital consult services, clinics, and home-based programs; hospice roles focus on comfort-directed care at home, in facilities, and in inpatient hospice units. Both lean heavily on communication skills — goals-of-care conversations are the core clinical procedure.

Requirements & certification

• Graduate NP degree with national certification through AANP or ANCC (adult-gerontology or family track per the patient population)
• The optional ACHPN credential through the Hospice and Palliative Credentialing Center (HPCC) recognizes advanced hospice and palliative practice
• Active state APRN licensure and DEA registration — symptom management relies on controlled-substance prescribing
• Employers screen for serious-illness communication skills and comfort with complex symptom management
