Full Practice

Licensure and practice rules in Maryland

AANP classifies Maryland as a full practice state. Maryland grants full practice authority to NPs. Applicants who have never been certified as NPs by any board of nursing must name a mentor on their application, a physician or NP licensed in Maryland with at least three years of clinical practice experience, who is available for consultation and collaboration for 18 months starting on the date the Maryland Board of Nursing receives the application.

Maryland is a Nurse Licensure Compact member. The compact covers the RN license beneath your APRN credential. The APRN license itself is still issued by Maryland.

Applications, fees and renewal rules come from the Maryland Board of Nursing.

Sources: AANP State Practice Environment (practice authority); NCSBN Nurse Licensure Compact roster (verified August 11, 2026); BLS OEWS, Nurse Practitioners (29-1171), median annual wage, May 2025. Counts come from live listings on this board, recounted October 25, 2026.
