The Role

The Emergency role at a glance

Emergency nurse practitioners (ENPs) evaluate and treat the full acuity spectrum of the emergency department — fast-track injuries and infections through supporting higher-acuity resuscitation care — in hospital EDs, freestanding emergency centers, and high-acuity urgent care.

The work is shift-based and undifferentiated by design: you see what comes through the door, stabilize, treat, and disposition. Procedural volume is high — suturing, splinting, reductions, and bedside ultrasound where trained.

Requirements & certification

• Most ENPs certify first as FNPs (FNP-C via AANP or FNP-BC via ANCC) for all-ages scope
• The ENP-C specialty credential (AANP certification board) is earned by certified FNPs with emergency preparation; some roles accept acute-care certification instead
• Active state APRN licensure and DEA registration
• ACLS and PALS are standard; trauma course completion strengthens candidacy
