The Role

The Orthopedic role at a glance

Orthopedic nurse practitioners work across sports medicine, joint replacement, and spine practices — fracture care, joint injections, pre- and post-operative management, and first-assist duties in the OR for surgical roles.

The typical week mixes clinic (new injuries, post-op checks, injections) with OR days for NPs credentialed to first-assist. Patient populations run from student athletes to joint-replacement candidates.

Requirements & certification

• Graduate NP degree with national certification through AANP or ANCC (family or adult-gerontology track per the practice population)
• The optional ONP-C credential through the Orthopaedic Nurses Certification Board (ONCB) recognizes orthopedic NP practice
• Surgical roles require RNFA or first-assist credentialing per hospital policy
• Active state APRN licensure; casting, splinting, and joint-injection skills are standard screens
