The Role

The Pain Management role at a glance

Pain management nurse practitioners evaluate and treat acute, chronic, and cancer-related pain — building multimodal plans that combine medication management, interventional procedures, physical rehabilitation, and behavioral approaches.

Roles sit in interventional pain clinics, anesthesiology-led practices, spine and orthopedic groups, cancer centers, and hospital-based pain services. Much of the work is longitudinal: functional goal-setting, opioid stewardship, and coordination with surgery, physical therapy, and behavioral health.

Requirements & certification

• Graduate NP degree with national certification through AANP or ANCC (family or adult-gerontology track per the practice population)
• Active state APRN licensure and DEA registration — controlled-substance prescribing is central to the role
• Controlled-substance rules, opioid-prescribing limits, and prescription drug monitoring program (PDMP) requirements are set state by state; confirm them with your state board before you start
• Employers screen for opioid stewardship, risk assessment, and interventional-procedure workflow experience
